Times to Remember

I want to show you the "pop cooler" that kept our "pop" cold and ready to drink.

We had a little grocery down the road from my house.   The floors had that old hardwood, dark and a little warped from the conditioning, with a squeak here and there.  The screen door had a "Colonial Is Good Bread" bar across the front.  Inside there was a couch to the right, in front of the large window. To the left was a keg for sitting and there were usually someone on that keg and someone on that couch, catching up on the local news and swapping stories/jokes.

Outside that window was a bench.  I sat on that bench often.  We'd take walks up and down the road..and the bench was a place to cool off.  The store closed at 5:00 pm each day and closed on Sunday.  If you started supper after 5:00 pm and needed something... you were out of luck.

There was a coke cooler beside the counter.  Cold water inside the cooler, kept the bottles of "pop" cold.  Just lift out a coke, wipe off the water with your hand, open it on the side of the cooler and have a cold drink.  Cokes were 5 cents.  There were also Royal Crown, Nehi Orange and Grape, all were 5 cents.  My favorite was Royal Crown because it was in a bigger bottle than Coke.

The candy case was to the right of the coke cooler.  All those candy bars and gum were 5 cents.

Bread was 18 cents.  A box of cereal was 39 cents.  Life as it was then... slower, calmer, and I thought it would last forever.
