Today is a rainy day in Georgia. We've had a lot of rainy weekends this fall/winter so far. It rained the week of Thanksgiving... all week and all weekend. I know we need rain.... but the sunshine sets such a nicer tone. Rainy days are for staying home and doing those things that have been put off.
I used to live in Indiana where we had snow days. A lot of snow on a lot of days. That sets a whole different tone also. To be snowed in for 2 weeks gives a person cabin fever. January and February are long months... or so it seems. You know it's going to be cold and you know it's going to be at least 60 more days of cold weather. No more breaks in school... no more days off for holidays... so settle in for the duration. Knit, crochet, clean, read, watch a movie, pop the popcorn, bake that pie, play a game or two or three.... just enjoy the time and know it's the seasons. Spring will arrive... it always has.
I used to watch golf tournaments on TV, just to see sunshine somewhere.. just to see green grass, shirt sleeves and know it would be spring again in Indiana. When it's Easter Sunday and you have to wear your winter coat to church, you know spring isn't happening just yet. But it's just around the corner... you can bet on it.
If you haven't lived in Indiana, and happen to spend a week in June or July in that area, you'd like to just live there.. it's that nice. Not too hot and not cold.. springtime up there is wonderful... the summers are superb. However, those months are not near long enough ... spring sometimes is late, fall sometimes is early... and winter is sometimes forever.. or so it seems.
I remember one year on the day of the family reunion, which was always held on the 3rd Sunday in June at the local park, it was so cold we had a fire in the little stove in the cabin and it rained all day. No playground fun, no rides on the lake, just sitting around the stove trying to keep warm.
But those summers in Indiana are full of fun. Time to "blow the stink off" (as my DH used to say) and get some sun. Ride the bike, swing, barbecue, see who survived the winter... and enjoy the days. Get the mower out, till the garden, plant some seeds, put some tomato plants in the ground, and watch the flowers bloom again. One week it can be cold and still in winter's grasp.. the next week can turn warm and spring has sprung.
You just can't count on the weather... but you can count on the seasons... they roll around in their own sweet time.
